Experimentation in the laboratory of tectonophysics (Department of Dynamic Geology, Geological Faculty, Moscow State University)

Geological modeling department specialists visited the laboratory of tectonophysics in MSU.

The purpose of laboratory research is to clarify the conditions, mechanism and reasons for the formation of various tectonic structures of various scales - from deformed crystals to drifting continents.

During the visit, the theoretical aspects of structural parageneses of complex shear settings, structures formed in transpression and transtension in nature, the reasons for the formation of flower structures in shear zones were considered.

Under the guidance of the Honored Researcher of Moscow University, Head of the Laboratory, PhD Frolova Natalya Sergeevna, together with the laboratory staff and employees of CJSC MiMGO, an experiment was prepared and conducted. In the result of the visit comparison with natural objects was offered.

After the appearance of a number of 3D seismic arrays, it became obvious that transpression structures in Western Siberia is a widespread phenomenon. Shear structures, for example, are reliably identified by 3D seismic surveys within the Purovsky region of the Nadym-Taz syneclise in a number of areas of Gazprom Neft OJSC, Rosneft-Purneftegaz OJSC, Lukoil Oil Company OJSC and other subsoil users (Ety-Purovsky, Komsomolsky, Kharampur, Chaselsky concepts, Kynskoe, Russian, Novogodnee, Gubkinskoe and other uplifts) (Gogonenkov et al., 2007).

After conducting the experiment with their own hands, the specialists got a much more detailed and visual idea of the genesis of shear deformations, and their knowledge, including about the geology of Western Siberia, was supplemented.

#Transpression is a tectonic regime that combines shear and compression conditions. Transpression zones are formed if the shear zone experiences additional lateral compression. The indicators of transpression zones are reverse faults and the so-called "flower" structures.

#Transtension is an oblique stretch that causes the formation of shear-spreading. During transtension along the transform discontinuity, separation and formation of fissures with steep steep slopes occur.
